The recognition (award of status) of a municipality as a spa or health resort provides it with a proven locational advantage.
A municipality may apply for this designation either for the municipality as a whole or for individual districts. It is subject to strict requirements.
Municipalities may be awarded the following designations:
Depending on which classification you are applying for, you will need to provide evidence that you meet different requirements.
Tip: Further details on the designations and requirements can be found in the “Definitions – Quality Standards for the Classification of Spa Resorts, Holiday Resorts and Mineral Springs”. These arepublished by the GermanSpa Association (Deutscher Heilbäderverband e.V.) in conjunction with the German Tourism Association (Deutscher Tourismusverband e.V.). Together with the Baden-Württemberg Spa Towns Act, they form the basis for recognition.
You must submit applications for all species designations to the relevant regional council. To clarify the details of the application process, you should contact them in advance.

This recognition entails both rights and obligations for the local authority and for accommodation and service providers. Municipalities that are not designated as state spas may enact their own by-laws to levy a visitor’s tax. They may require accommodation and service providers to collect the visitor’s tax from guests.
