Lake Constance boat licence - take the exam

As a rule, you require a Lake Constance skipper's licence to operate a vessel registered on Lake Constance if

  • the ship or boat is powered by an engine and the engine power is over 4.4 kilowatts
  • the sailboat has more than 12 square metres of sail area

You will receive the Lake Constance skipper's licence if you have successfully passed the theoretical and practical examinations. The skipper's licence is available for the following categories:

  • Category A: motorised vessels, provided they do not fall under categories B and C
  • Category B: Passenger ships
  • Category C: Freight vessels and floating devices with their own propulsion
  • Category D: Sailing boats

Note: With a category B or C licence, you also have the right to operate category A vessels.

Tip: Under certain conditions, you can temporarilyea temporary holiday or holidaymaker's licence. It is valid for 30 days within a calendar year.

Prerequisite

The requirements for obtaining a boatmaster's licence for categories A and D are

  • for category D: persons aged 14 and over
  • for category A: persons aged 18 and over
  • mental and physical fitness to skipper a vessel
    • sufficient hearing
    • sufficient eyesight
    • sufficient ability to distinguish colours
  • Your previous behaviour suggests that as a skipper you will observe the regulations and show consideration for others.

Procedure

You can register for the theoretical and practical test directly at the relevant district office.

You can register with the Lindau district office using an application form, which is available on the homepage. You can register online at the district offices of Constance and Bodenseekreis in Friedrichshafen.

Please note: You do not have to attend a sailing school or a yacht club Yacht club for the licence. However, attendance is recommended. The examnusually take place weekly in the summer months.

You can usually register for the practical examination by telephone at the district office and arrange the examination date and location.

For the practical examination

  • you must provide an authorised, patentable boat of the relevant propulsion type,
  • a licence holder must be on board as the skipper and
  • the boat must be authorised for at least three people.

Note: If, for example, you have a "Sportbootführerschein Binnen" or "Sportbootführerschein See", you may be exempt from the practical examination. The exemption depends on whether your certificates of competence are anercan be recognised.

Recognition of other certificates of competence:

Holders of

  • of the DSV-A licence, issued until 31.03.1989, or
  • the recreational craft licence with the scope of inland waterways under sail or
  • the recreational coaster licence

the practical sailing boat examination and the theoretical sailing questions are recognised.

Holders:

  • of the recreational boating licence with the scope of maritime waterways or inland waterways under engine or
  • the recreational coaster licence

the practical motorboat examination is recognised.

Deadlines

  • You must pass all theoretical and practical parts of the examination within twelve months to obtain your licence.

Note: In special cases, such as illness or pregnancy, you can apply in writing for an extension of the deadline.

  • Copy of the photo ID
  • copies of certificates of competence, if applicable

Costs

The fees for the patent examinations are determined independently by the responsible district office.

Processing time

depends on the individual case

Processing usually takes place within one week. However, it can also take up to four weeks.
